MANILA, Philippines — Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating has jokingly claimed that their group is the number one boy band in the world.

Speaking to the audience at the Manila leg of their Asian farewell concert at the Mall of Asia Arena, Ronan said the rest of the boy bands have just followed in their footsteps.

Ronan added that the reception they receive in Manila every time they perform is amazing.

“I know there’s a special relationship between Manila and Boyzone. You know, we’re almost the original boy band, everyone else follows. The loyalty and love we still feel today 25 years from now is unbelievable” , did he declare.

He acknowledged that the audience that night was mostly born in the 90s, hinting that their music is still a hit with younger generations.

“I look at the crowd and all these faces, mostly born in the 90s. We were born in the 50s and 60s. You’re all too young and too beautiful. You’ve got brighter pop bands coming to Manila , you know the Backstreet Boys and NSync,” he said.

“I wasn’t saying you had to cheer for the Backstreet Boys or anything,” he joked.

The boy band performed their latest single, “Because”, written by Ed Sheeran, and hinted that the single is among the last they have recorded for their latest album, which will be released in November.

Keating, however, hinted that their farewell tour does not mean goodbye; and that this is just the start of another chapter in their career. He also mentioned that they could be back next year for hopefully “a bigger thriller” in Manila.

The Boyzone concert in Manila was led by Filipino balladist Christian Bautista and Filipino girl group 4th Impact, who performed a medley of Destiny’s Child songs and ended their performance with “Bang Bang”, the “song that changed our lives,” they said.

The band, which landed in fifth place on ‘The X Factor UK’, said their audition video for ‘Bang Bang’ now has over 160 million views, the highest to date for any video.” The X Factor UK”. — Videos by Deni Rose M. Afinidad-Bernardo
