‘The Umbrella Academy’ Cast Reacts To Backstreet Boys Fight Scene In Season 2

The Umbrella Academy has always used popular music on its soundtrack. Season 1 included hits such as “I Think We’re Alone Now” and “Dancing In the Moonlight”. Season 2 may have ended with a fight scene marked by “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” by the Backstreet Boys.

Umbrella Academy Showrunner Steve Blackman and cast members were on a Television Critics Association Zoom panel for Season 2 on August 4. Blackman and Emmy stars Raver-Lampman, David Castañeda and Ellen Page discussed the Backstreet Boys song on their show. Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

The Backstreet Boys were a last minute addition to “The Umbrella Academy”

Normally, Blackman writes the songs in the Umbrella Academy scripts. Even if they don’t hear them on set, the actors know what the song will be.

“We write a lot of the music in the show,” Blackman said. “I choose the songs in advance. I try to share a lot with these guys. Sometimes they change, but most of the time we have an idea.

The Backstreet Boys came to Blackman late at night.

“It was two in the morning in Toronto,” Blackman said. “These guys were shooting somewhere in the snow. I had to change the song. I had a few cocktails, remembered a song I like from them, thought it couldn’t work on stage. The more I played it reading and writing the scene, the more I realized it was a perfect match.

Emmy Raver-Lampman reacts to the Backstreet Boys

Raver-Lampman felt that viewers always feel that every song that appears on the show is the best. So they had to drop the Backstreet Boys to outdo each other.

“I feel like the show is constantly trying to outdo itself with the needle drops,” Raver-Lampan said. “At that point, you’re like, ‘There couldn’t be another song that’s going to beat the one we just heard,’ and then it happened.”

So much time has passed between filming and streaming, Raver-Lampman was able to enjoy Backstreet Boys again.

“I think I forgot”, Raver-Lampan. “We shot this season a year ago, especially this particular scene. That was a year ago, and I think it completely slipped my mind. So, watching the episode, I felt like I was watching the scene before where Robert was like talking to him, and my ears perked up. I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Why do I know these words? And then it crashed into the next scene and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I forgot!’ »

David Castañeda reacts to the Backstreet Boys

David Castañeda listened to the Backstreet Boys before filming the scene.

“I’m extremely attached when I read the script,” Castañeda said. “I’m just going to put it on my Spotify and make a playlist of it. I just make sure I never share it with anyone because I want to keep this song fresh. But I listen to it every day for that we are shooting this specific episode.

Fighting the Backstreet Boys was easier.

“I was just happy it wasn’t me dancing,” Castañeda said. “I have to enjoy it as a spectator.”

Ellen Page reacts to the Backstreet Boys

Page was asked about his favorite song from Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy too. She agreed with her castmates.
