There are few games as instantly recognizable as 2012’s cult classic, Lollipop Chainsaw. With a screenplay written by James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy, Lollipop Chainsaw was a brutally funny game about a cheerleader battling zombies with a chainsaw and her dead (but still animated) boyfriend’s head hanging from her hip. And now it’s getting a remake.
On the game’s 10th anniversary last month, the internet lost its mind when a simple “Lollipop Chainsaw is back” Tweet from Yoshimi Yasuda, the game’s producer, teased the game’s sequel. Now, though, we have confirmation. real future of the beloved classic.
Last night, Yoshimi Yasuda shared on Twitter that he bought the rights to Lollipop Chainsaw from publisher Kadokawa Games. He also revealed that he reunited the game’s original development team, who are currently working with him on the upcoming remake. Yoshimi explained on Twitter:
“Unfortunately, various factors have caused fans to no longer be able to play Lollipop Chainsaw easily, and it has been some time since players have been able to access the game on current consoles; as such, we have bought the IP of Lollipop Chainsaw from Kadokawa Games and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about the development and are supported by them in this endeavour.
While the game isn’t the sequel many were expecting last month, there are some changes that will need to be made. For example, most licensed soundtracks will need to be replaced. They’re also taking this opportunity to replace the game’s iconic, almost cel-shaded look with more realistic graphics.
While an official release date for the remake hasn’t been set yet, Yoshimi said gamers can expect to get back into gaming trash but in a good way next year.
